More Poetry Success in ‘Mother Tongue’ Competition ( Published: 20/07/2017)

26 students from Whalley Range 11-18 High School entered this years regional ‘Mother Tongue Other Tongue’ poetry competition, with one of our students claiming the top prize for the North West.

For the second year in a row, Whalley Range claimed the top prize in the North West competition thanks to Farhana (Year 9), who chose to write her fantastic poem in Bengali. The standard of poems was very high this year, making it very difficult for the judges to pick out the winners.

Emily (Year 8), also took part in the competition:

We took part in the Mother Tongue Other Tongue competition this year and have been promoting it throughout the school. I personally entered the competition myself; I entered one mother tongue in Cantone and two other tongues (Mandarin and German). Writing these poems was both fun and exciting.

Mother Tongue Other Tongue is a multilingual poetry competition to celebrate diversity. It is officially endorsed by Malala Youzafzai, youngest Nobel peace prize winner and Education activist.

You can find out more about the competition here on the Manchester Metropolitan University website.
